"The funny thing is this was supposed to be a short novel with a tight scope, and whenever I read my sources on this, it was limited to a chapter at best of Savarkar’s life. That’s what my first draft was, too. But then I had to be like “But what were each of them really like?” and “What were the trains like in Edwardian London?”. Then I found reality much more insane compared to anything I could have come up with, and I had to write it all down while having a baby and managing the ups and downs of tech life."

Now I know why I have been waiting 11 years (and counting) for the latest Game of Thrones novel!

PS: Does it annoy anyone else that Substack comments don't have a "quote" feature? Seems to be a basic need.

I've heard brandon sanderson talk about GRRM and he says GRRM was always slow and slowed down even further with age.

I haven't read the GoT books, but my friends who have said GRRM made it his whole thing to unexpectedly bop off people, and he ended up painting himself into a corner and is struggling with advancing the plot while keeping the characters consistent. Does that sound right?

And yes, the comments def need a quote feature. that's where you need the quote feature the most!

Yeah, as @Cultural Chronicler said below, that's pretty much it.

Although, at this point, I don't even remember because it has been a decade since I have last picked up his books!

Yeah, pretty much. There are way too many POVs and moving parts to keep track of. Plus, GRRM is more of a “gardener” when it comes to storytelling—he lets his characters grow naturally rather than sticking to a rigid outline. On top of that, he constantly rewrites and deletes huge chunks of his work.

There’s another big factor at play here: the absolute disaster that was Game of Thrones Season 8. I think GRRM is under a ton of pressure to deliver an ending that won’t disappoint fans, especially since a lot of people believe the show’s finale (most probably based on his planned book ending) was very poorly executed.

Yeah, i think plotting is great for these reasons. You're able to find places you'll get stuck in sooner and work on them. I started off as a gardener, but realized that's how you get stuck a lot, and decided instead to garden while plotting. I found the Story Genius method which is what really got me going in a flow. It might be too late for GRRM to rejig his whole series according to Storygenius.... but maybe he can give it a shot, helped by a whole army of fans?

So do the inscriptions mention anyone apart from Pashupatinath?

Not that I've seen. From what I saw, everything was some name of rudra. Except the lothal one that was big enough to be seen from a distance, and this is what convinced me - it says Dwaravararaka - gateway to the city of diamonds.
