The cops thought they cracked the case by getting informants and approvers, but they hadn’t prepared for the off-chance of these people getting ended — in the hospital wing of the prison, at that.

The second part of this chapter involves the off-duty inspector who reported that Prafulla Chaki was looking suspicious. And apparently the members of Anushilan Samiti found him and shot him as well.

Times were wild. It was hard to be a law-abiding citizen and a patriot.

Satyen Bose waited in the Alipore Jail hospital, with Linton and Higgins, European convict overseers, watching him closely.

Then he appeared. The tall, wiry frame of Naren Goswami came into view, with another European convict overseer with him.

“I could barely believe my ears when I heard, Satyen!” Naren said, “I had to see for myself.”
